Frequently Asked Questions
Do you treat animals other than birds or reptiles?
We do NOT currently treat any animals other than birds, reptiles or amphibians. We will treat backyard birds, such as chickens, ducks, and other waterfowl. We do NOT treat any poisonous animals.
What are your prices?
Our most common prices are listed on our website here. Lab tests will vary dependent on factors such as shipping, laboratory charge, and type of test. We do NOT offer multi-pet discounts, or other discounts. We base our price structure on the Value-based model of charging appropriately for our valuable time and experience (in the exam fee), while charging for tests and medications/supplements at a much lower markup than most traditional “brick and mortar” clinics. This often results in a final bill equal to or LESS than what may be paid to other clinics. Unlike a clinic visit, these visits will also include a critically important evaluation of husbandry/cage set up, including UV light output, temp checks etc, as applicable for birds and reptiles/amphibians.
A cancellation made in under 24 hr, or a No-Show will incur a $55 Cancellation Fee.
Do you charge a travel/mobile fee?
Yes, all visits (within 30 min drive of West Asheville) will incur an additional $55 travel fee, to be paid at the time services are rendered along with applicable charges.
What regions/cities do you service?
Due to the topographical variation of the region, we do not have a strict mile or minute radius. We generally will serve any area within Buncombe County within a 30 minute radius, but is subject to approval. Contact us with your address to discuss if you qualify! Travel fees will be proportionately increased for areas further than 30 minutes from West Asheville.
What if I have an emergency or need my animal hospitalized?
We have agreements with several local clinics to provide services such as radiology or hospitalization, as needed. If you have an emergency and need immediate attention, we recommend to contact:
University of TN Exotics Department, Knoxville, TN, (865) 974-8387
Carolina Veterinary Specialists, Huntersville, NC, (704) 949-1100
Veterinary Emergency Group, Asheville, NC, (828) 470-7802
Find-A-Vet option at ARAV.org (reptiles/amphibians), or AAV.org (birds)
Do you see poisonous reptiles/amphibians?
No.
What type of services or treatments do you perform?
We are pleased to offer wellness exams, wing, nail, and beak trims, illness exams, euthanasia, and numerous screening and diagnostic laboratory tests, for both pet birds and reptiles/amphibians. We also offer USDA health certificates. We may or may not have an assistant with us, so please let us know if you are able or interested in restraining.
What should I do to prepare for the visit?
Generally it is best to keep your pet’s normal routine as much as possible up until the visit. It’s often desirable to have a recent (but NOT stressed) fecal sample from earlier that day (or most recent one if a reptile/amphibian) for applicable testing. It can be placed into an air-tight container or plastic baggie and refrigerated to keep it from drying out. If you have a bird that is likely to fly or is difficult to restrain, please place them in a bird cage or small carrier just prior to appointment to facilitate restraint and minimize stress.
If you have a bird, you can also minimize future stress by training your bird to perform simple tasks, such as stepping up/down on command, standing on a scale or specific perch, and being wrapped in a towel. It’s also not a bad idea to occasionally offer a special treat or juice from an oral syringe to create a positive association in anticipation of future medicating!
When do you see appointments?
We generally see appointments on Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 am- 5 pm. Contact us if special arrangements or exceptions are needed. Appointments will generally last an hour.
What kind of payment do you accept?
We accept all credit cards (with 3% surcharge), check or cash. We are also pleased to offer CareCredit, or ScratchPay options to help clients pay larger bills over a period of time, often with low or no interest options. Contact us, or the respective companies for more information prior to your visit.
